Have you ever wished you didn't need to wear glasses or contacts as you go about your day? Does LASIK scare you? Or cost too much? Or you are not old enough? If the answer to any of these questions is, "Yes," then you should learn about Ortho-keratology.
Ortho-keratology is the science of using rigid gas permeable contact lenses to gently shape the cornea in order to correct myopia (nearsightedness). These special contact lenses are worn at night while sleeping, and act the same as dental retainers in holding the cornea to the shape that will allow for clear, normal vision all day long, without wearing glasses or contact lenses.
The best candidates for ortho-k are people with less than -4.00 prescription and less than 1.00 astigmatism. Ortho-k also works especially well for children who are 8 years of age or older, and may even slow or stop myopic progression.
Dr. Steven Rosen has been performing Ortho-keratology for over 6 years. According to Dr. Rosen, "The introduction of highly oxygen permeable lens materials, along with computerized corneal topography and reverse-geometry lens designs has made Ortho-keratology very reliable and effective. Patients and their parents are very enthusiastic about their vision."
